Railway Group B promotion exams: choose your stream and build a study plan

RuleMithra Editorial ·

Railway Group B preparation starts with the correct departmental examination, not a generic collection of questions. Official Railway CBT notices identify streams including APO, AOM, ACM, AEN, AEE, AME/AWM, ASTE, AMM and AFA. Selection and LDCE notices can have different conditions. This guide is a study-planning aid, not a vacancy announcement.

Start with your own notification

Create a one-page checklist containing your zone or production unit, post, selection route, notification number, examination scheme and applicable syllabus. Record the date of each document. Keep subsequent amendments beside the original notice. Do not infer eligibility or negative marking from another department's mock test.

Match each topic to a source

Make a table with four columns: syllabus topic, official manual or circular, relevant chapter, and revision status. A topic without a source is a gap to resolve rather than an invitation to memorise an unsupported answer. Keep professional subjects separate from any common establishment or finance portion prescribed by your notification.

Practise in three passes

First read a small source section and write a short summary from memory. Next attempt topic questions without looking at the text. Finally use a timed mixed set and classify each mistake as a knowledge gap, a reading error or a time-management problem. These categories tell you what to change during the next study session.

Use mocks as feedback

A 100-question practice paper is useful for rehearsal, but its length alone does not establish that it matches an official examination scheme. Check the stated duration, marking and source scope before starting. Revisit answers marked for review and verify disputed explanations against the governing source.
